MIAC Senior Spotlight – Track & Field

Parkway Christian

Griffin Adams (left) – Griffin Adams is a two sport athlete (football and track) at Parkway and a lead in the high school musical “Sound of Music”. Griffin was a state qualifier in hurdles his junior year and received a MIAC conference award.

Zack Jaksa (center) – Zack Jaksa is a four sport athlete (football, basketball, track and baseball) at Parkway. Zack qualified for states and won a MIAC award for discus.

Joe Gillette (right) – Joe Gillette is a two sport athlete (football and track) at Parkway. Last year Joe also contributed to the baseball team when needed. Joe is a sprinter and as a junior received a MIAC conference award for his part in a relay.

Clarenceville

Alison Couch – Student athlete is a title that Alison took to heart. She did not allow the difficulty of something to stop her. She took that difficult task and turned it into an attainable challenge. She was a hard worker and a true leader of the Clarenceville Trojans Track and Field Team. As our only female hurdler for a couple of years, Alison rose to the occasion by being one of the team’s highest points scorers. While hurdles was Alison’s main event, she contributed to the team in relays as well. She had a heart for her teammates — cheering them on and encouraging them to strive for greatness. Alison’s athleticism, persistence and grit earned her Conference, District, and Regional honors.

Alison will be attending Central Michigan University in the fall, we are sure as one of their brightest and best. Thank you, Alison for being a positive addition to our team. We are proud of you!

Dean Harrington – Astute: having or showing an ability to accurately assess situations or people and turn this to one’s advantage. Dean is an astute athlete. His contribution to the Clarenceville Trojans Track and Field Team was immeasurable. His commitment to the team and to himself as an athlete was evident on and off the track. Dean strived to bring the best to each meet, and he expected the best from his teammates. He ran individual events as well as relays, pushing the team to numerous victories. Dean’s tenacity earned him many honors including District, Conference, and Regional honors. Setting goals and working hard to achieve them was no foreign to Dean. He successfully PR’d consistently in each meet over the seasons.

Dean will be continuing his journey in college in the fall. We truly appreciated all that Dean brought to the team athletically and as a leader. We are proud to have called him a Trojan! Thank you, Dean for never giving up and for leading us to so many victories!

Gavin Mitchell – As a distance runner, Gavin brought a competitive calm to the Clarenceville Trojans Track and Field Team. He ran with great determination and purpose. Each meet and each year that Gavin competed, he pursued and achieved his PR. He ran in individual events as well as relays, displaying his contribution to teamwork. As a postured student athlete, Gavin has made his mark as a Trojan. He has earned District, Conference, and Regional honors.

Gavin will be continuing on to the University of Michigan Dearborn to pursue Computer Engineering. It has been a pleasure to have Gavin as a part of our team and to watch him flourish. One Team, One Family! We are so proud of you Gavin. Thank you for being such an intricate part of our team!

Nathan Thomas – As a four-year member of the Clarenceville Trojans Track and Field Team, Nate aspired to be a better athlete each time he stepped on the track. Through dedicated hard work, the ascertainment of goals set, and focus, that aspiration was a reality that contributed to him being the true definition of a student athlete. He ran sprints individually and as member of relay teams. He ran the last leg for many of the relays, showing the team he could even as an anchor. Nate earned many honors during his career as a Trojan including District, Conference, and Regional honors. His athleticism and attention to the details of improving his running was a great contribution to our team.

Nate will be attending Michigan State University in the fall, where we know he will continue to shine. Thank you for doing such a Great job, Nate! We are proud of you!

William Vernier – Will has been a part of the Clarenceville Trojans Track and Field Team since his freshman year. He exemplified leadership and a great work ethic on and off the track. As a three-sportstudent athlete, Will has been a positive contributor to winning Conference, District, and Regional honors. Hard work and determination are just a couple of characteristics that made Will a wonderful teammate and an athlete that any coach would be excited to have on their team. Will excelled as a distance runner in individual events as well as relays.

He will be beginning his next chapter at Alma College. We are very proud of you, Will. Thank you for being a Trojan!

 

HURON VALLEY LUTHERAN

The HVL track and field team was heading into the 2020 track season with a competitive roster of athletes and high expectations. Leading the charge was a group of 3 talented and dedicated seniors. We thank and applaud these seniors for their contributions to the HVL track and field program.

Charyl Stockwell Prep

Jackson Munkres – School record holder and state finalist in the discus with a PR of 100’9”. Also competed in the long jump and multiple relays – always willing to fill in any holes and help the team in any way he could.

 

 

 

Tre Hill – School record holder and state finalist in pole vault, finished 13th in the finals with a PR of 10’6”. School record holder in shot put 30’10”. School record holder in the 800m and top 10 in the 400m and 1600m. Likely the best track athlete on the team, too bad we don’t have decathlon at the high school level, he would dominate that competition.

 

 

 

Michael Warner – Michael was one of the best cross country runners we’ve had and 2019 was his only season in track. An illness limited his output in that season but he managed the 3rd best 1600m time in school history (5:19.21) and he was part of the school record 4x800m relay.

 

Jasmine Robbins – Number 2 all time in the 400m (1:12.06) and number 3 all time in the 800. Jasmine is part of the school record relay teams in the 4x200m and 4x400m. She also gave high jump a try and came in second at a league meet.

 

 

Paige Gallentine – 2019 MIAC MVP in track and field. School record holder and state finalist in 100m (12:54 PR), high jump (4’11 PR), long jump (16’10.5” PR) and 4x100m. Four time all state (100m twice and long jump twice), she qualified for the state finals in four events both years she competed track. Paige is the ultimate competitor and raised the level of performance of everyone around her.

Charyl Stockwell Prep Academy High School is proud of our Senior Track and Field Athletes and wish them all the best as they move on from high school to college and beyond. Way to go SENTINELS !

Southfield Christian

Dubem Amene – Dubem won the 2019 400 Meter MHSAA State Championship and was a part of the 2019 MHSAA State Runner-up 1600 and 3200 Meter Relay teams. He broke the school’s 800 Meter record running a time of 1:55.95. This past winter Dubem ran the 4th fastest indoor 400 Meter time in Michigan history at the MITS State Meet in 48.59.

He will enroll at the University of Michigan in the fall and has signed to run track for the Wolverines.

 

 

 

Chris Davenport – Chris is a 4 year member of the track team and he was the 2019 MHSAA State Runner-up in the 100 Meter and in the Long Jump. He was also a member of the 2019 MHSAA State Runner-up 800 and 1600 Meter Relay teams. Chris holds the school record in the long jump having jumped 21’3.75″.

In the fall, Chris will be attending the University of Michigan.

 

 

 

 

Gabriel McFerrin – Gabe is a 4 year member of the track team and has played 4 years of football. He was a member on the varsity basketball team this past winter and he was a recipient of the 2019 track team’s Most Team Spirited Award.

Gabe will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall.

 

 

 

 

Roeper

Chris Ban and Caleb Bartes were senior captains on our track team that demonstrated incredible leadership during this spring as we converted over to virtual practices. Caleb and Chris both brought humor, sound advice, and led by example as we took on the ominous task of hosting practices on Zoom and documenting workouts on STRAVA.

Chris has been preparing the last several years to become a strong and elite 400m runner. Over the last few years he built up his strength to help compliment his mental toughness. This year would have been his to shine if given the opportunity to compete.

Chris will be attending Purdue next year and you can be sure he will change the world in some capacity with his knowledge of computer science.

 

 

 

 

 

Caleb was Roeper’s premier hurdler just missing out on his trip to the MHSAA State Finals last year and patiently awaiting one more crack at punching his ticket to the finals. He was stronger than any other year, his form had been refined, and was waiting for his chance as a senior but wasn’t given an opportunity with the cancelation of the season.

Caleb will be attending American University in Washington D.C. You can be assured at some point that he will hit the political arena.  He has been a passionate supporter and campaigner for the John James campaign over the last several years.

Oakland Christian

Clint Sumner ran track for his first three years of high school and was looking forward to his senior year. As a freshman, he ran the sprints, and as a sophomore began to focus on the 400 meters, with an occasional attempt at the high jump. His junior year, he continued to improve at the 400 meters, posting a personal best of 56.96, and also spent time in the 800 meters and throwing the discus. Clint contributed to both the 4x200m and 4x400m relay squads. Clint also ran one season of cross-country during his senior year.

 

 

 

 

Luke Messing was looking forward this spring to his third year on the track team. His main event was the 800 meters, with a personal best of 2:12.93 set during his junior year. Along with Tim Dupree and 2019 graduates Noah Camaj and Lucas Brattinga, Luke was a member of the school record-setting 4×800 relay with a best time of 8:36.90. He also occasionally ran the 400 meters and the 4x400m relay, and spent two years on the OCS cross-country team.

 

 

 

 

Preston McFarland has been on the OCS track team since his sophomore year. In 10th grade, he ran in the sprints and in the 1600 m and as a junior, was able to break his goal of 6:30 for the 1600 meters, finishing the year with his best time of 6:10.3. This year, he looked for continued improvement in the mile as well as contributing to the 4×800 relay and the long jump. He was a 4-year cross-country runner at OCS, earning 2 varsity letters. Preston plans to attend OCC for a semester and is then considering Cornerstone University or Michigan State.

 

 

 

Mackenzie Wander had planned to compete on the track team this season for the first time. She had successfully completed one season of cross-country this past fall, with a 5k best time of 23:47. In prior years, Mackenzie’s schedule had been busy with competitive gymnastics. She will attend High Point University this fall.

 

 

 

 

 

Tim Dupree has run track at OCS since his sophomore year and has also been involved in three seasons of indoor track with club teams. His primary distance is the 800 meters, while also contributing in the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays, and at the 400 m and 1600 meter distances. With a personal best of 2:05:12 in the 800, which qualified him for the state finals, he had his eyes set on breaking the school record of 2:01 (set in 1982) and even getting under the 2:00 mark. Tim was part of the school record-breaking 4×800 relay team in his junior year, when their 8:36.90 also qualified for the state finals. He plans to attend High Point University this fall. Tim was also a four-year varsity cross-country runner, earning two regional medals.

 

 

Novi Christian Academy

 Three of NCA’s graduating seniors will be a large loss to the NCA Track and Field team. Ava and Noelle competed all through high school and have had great success in their track careers. Geoffrey started running his Junior year and proved to be a great runner. They were all truly a pleasure to their school, coaches and teammates.

 Ava Abramowicz

Ava vastly improved her track skills in her years at NCA. She ends her career as one of the hardest working athletes in practice (ex. 5-minute planks), always pushing the team to keep up with her core workouts. She started as a sprinter and worked her way up to the mid-distances. She even set the school’s 800m record. She always supported the relays running great times. 

Ava also participated on the NCA cheerleading team during the winter seasons.  She graduates with Distinguished Honors and is NCA’s Class of 2020’s Salutatorian.  Ava plans to attend UofM Dearborn’s College of Arts, Letters, & Science as part of the Honor’s program.

 

 

Noelle Bartlett

Noelle has had one of the greatest careers as a sprinter at NCA. Over her HS years, Noelle received 9 Regional medals.  She was All-Regional in 4 individual sprinting events (1 in the 100m and 3 in the 200m). She was also the anchor in all of our sprinting relays during her freshman through junior years, winning 5 All-Regional medals (3 in 400m and 2 in 800m relays) and setting school records in both.  She was exemplary in her training efforts. 

This past winter, Noelle participated on the cheerleading team as a proficient tumbler (a skill she honed from her many years in gymnastics).  Noelle graduates with High Honors.  She will continue her studies at Michigan State, majoring in Engineering.

 

 

Geoffrey Wallace

In Geoffrey’s short career at NCA, he has proven to be the greatest mid-distance runner (probably the greatest runner as he could be very competitive in any distance!). He set a school record in the 800m and broke the 400m record at Regionals, even while injured. He won the All-Regional in the 400m as well as the 4x400m relays. This year, he would have qualified for states in the 400m and would have likely won All State. Geoffrey is graduating from NCA with High Honors and will continue his studies at Concordia University, majoring in Computer Science. Geoffrey has received Concordia scholarships for both Track and Cross Country.

HURON VALLEY LUTHERAN

The senior class has left an indelible mark on the HVL baseball program during their 4 years at the school. One of those achievements was last year’s first district win in the last decade. Our entire HVL family will miss these great young men, but the baseball program will be forever grateful for their accomplishments and leadership. A note about each…

Roberto – He joined us as a junior never playing baseball before and displayed a natural ability for the mound as he would have been our #3 starter and a regular player in the infield. His willingness to learn and put in the extra work on his own led to his quick learning of the game. Good luck in your future as you begin your study of your trade.

Jared – He was a 4 year player (last 3 as a starter in the infield and / or the outfield). Jared’s unique ability to draw walks with his challenging strike zone put him on base in some of our most important situations. His drive to succeed allowed him to get the absolute most out of his athletic ability. Good luck as you go to Liberty in the fall.

Logan K – He was a four year starter and all-conference performer as a centerfielder the last 3 years. Logan’s speed in the outfield and his base stealing prowess was an integral part to our success. As a team leader and captain this spring, Logan encouraged his teammates to be better players, while at the same time leading by example. Good luck at Concordia next fall as you begin your college career.

Dima – He was a four year starter and an all-conference and all-district performer as a catcher. His batting career had some huge highs and a few downturns, but his excellence behind the plate will be hard to replace. As a team leader and captain this spring, Dima was willing to put in the work necessary to be a top-notch catcher in our area, and that work ethic will guide him in all his future endeavors. Good luck as you begin your studies at Eastern Michigan in the fall.

Zac – He was a four year starter and multiple time all-conference and all district performer as a hitter and a pitcher. Zac was our ace the last two years and our leading hitter the last two as well. Zac had a ton of natural athletic ability, but he also was willing to put the work in to become even better. That work ethic will lead him to great things. As a team leader, captain, and former MVP of our team the last two years, Zac will be sorely missed in our program. Good luck at Wayne State next fall.

Logan S – He was a member of our team for 3 of his 4 years in high school, playing full time as a freshman. Logan was a quality pitcher and infielder who was going to be a regular on the mound for us this spring as a starter. As a potential state qualifier in the high jump this spring, we had to share him with his love of track. Nevertheless, he would have succeeded in both due to his natural athletic ability. Good luck to you as you begin your studies at UM-Dearborn in the fall.

Jonathan – He was a 3 year starter (came his soph. season) and all-conference and all district performer as a hitter and infielder. His natural hitting style made him a staple in the middle of our order as a major run producer. His long arms and legs also made him a tough relief pitcher in the later innings. With his love of golf, we had to share him in the spring with the golf team. Nevertheless, he led our team in RBI’s last season even after suffering a foot injury early in the season. Your positive nature and your hitting ability in the middle of our lineup will be missed! Good luck as you begin to study your trade in the fall.

PARKWAY CHRISTIAN

Andrew Shea
Andrew Shea is a first year high school baseball player. He has participated in cross country for four years. Andrew is also involved in the theatre department.

Jacob Canady
Jacob is a first year high school baseball player. He participated in soccer for a couple of years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jacob Robinet
Jacob transferred to Parkway his junior year and became an integral part of our athletic department. While he wasn’t allowed to play in games right away, he contributed at practices until he was eligible to play. Last spring in baseball he received Academic All State and 2nd Team All Macomb County awards. As a senior Jake was a three sport athlete: football, basketball and baseball.

Mitchell Gross
Mitchell has participated on the baseball team for four years and played his first year of football this year. He is extremely dedicated to everything he pursues.

 

 

 

 

 

Matthew Politi
Matthew has been a member of the baseball team for four years. He also joined the football and basketball teams. Matthew is the only four year varsity baseball player on this year’s team. Last spring he received Academic All State, 2nd Team All Macomb County and 2nd Team MIAC honors.

Noah Thomas
Noah was joining the varsity baseball team for his first season. He has been a strong supporter of Parkway athletics for his entire high school career.

Sangsu has been a member of the baseball team for three years and was looking forward to his second year of eligibility.

 

Uriel Synod
Uriel returned to Parkway his junior year. This would have been his second year on the varsity baseball team. He also played football his senior year.

Zack double sported last spring contributing to the baseball team and qualifying for States as junior track athlete. Zack has played football for four years and will be continuing his football career at Bluffton University. Zack has also contributed to Parkway’s basketball team.

CHARYL STOCKWELL

Gray Glasser
Gray played left field and pitched for CSPA. He was a 3 year CSPA Varsity Letter winner. In 2019 he was All League, All District. Gray was one of the aces of the pitching staff. Gray will be attending MSU in the fall. His baseball talents and batting power will be sorely missed next year.

 

 

 

Jacob Sartor
Played Right Field for CSPA; was a 4 year varsity player. Jacob was known for exemplifying a great attitude and his desire to play has always been outstanding. It’s been a honor to have Jacob playing with this team. We will miss his great personality and talents. Jacob has been accepted into MSU and is planning on taking AFROTC. (Air Force officer training).

 

Gabe Knight
Gabe played Center Field and Pitcher for CSPA Baseball and was a 3 year Varsity Letter Winner. In 2019 he was All League, and All District. He was this year’s Team Captain. His leadership will be sorely missed as he takes his talents to the collegiate level. Gabe will be attending Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee and studying Sports Management. He will be playing baseball for WLC.

 

Travis Lucas
Travis played 3rd base and pitcher for CSPA. Travis is a 4 year varsity letter winner. He made the 2019 All League team. He is a solid player who provided excellent leadership on and off the field. He is a 3 sport athlete who has made a lasting impression on CSPA Athletics. He will be sorely missed. In the Fall Travis will be attending Xavier University where he earned an academic scholarship.

Drake Leverenz
Drake played shortstop and pitcher. He is a 2 year Varsity letter winner. He is a very talented player who never fully showcased his talents due to injuries. He was on track for a breakout 2020 season. Drake will be attending trade school in the fall.

Coach Pyke on Jack: Jack is a tremendous teammate. He is a student of the game always trying to find ways to get better. He leads by example. More than a baseball player, Jack always puts others first. He goes out of his way to check in on and help both the coaches and players. He is going to be a great addition to a college roster.

Favorite thing about OCS: The tight-knit community that is Oakland Christian, especially within the senior class.
Favorite baseball memory: During a game sophomore year it was raining, windy and cold. In the top of the second, I hit a no-doubt, big fly to center field for my first career homerun.
Coach Pyke says: Charlie is the best example when explaining to the team what hard work looks like. He has put in countless hours of training. He works the hardest when no one is looking. He is focused and attentive on the field. He is a good teammate and believes in doing what is best for the team.

He is a great competitor on the field, driven by a desire to always get better. He leads the charge at practice and is always ready to play. Gianni Miliotto
Gianni participated in baseball for all 4 seasons. Gianni showed excellent commitment and dedication to the program. He worked hard at gaining more playing time over the years. He had a great attitude and was a hard worker.

Chandler Thomas
Chandler was our starting left fielder ever since his Freshman year. He was known for making diving spectacular plays. Chandler wasn’t afraid to get dirty and he played the game hard. Chandler was always willing to do anything to help the team.

 

 

 

 

Justin Akkashian (left)
Justin was the captain of the outfield. He played center field for his entire career. He was one of our most consistent players. He was a smart player and had excellent base running instincts. Justin would always be looking forward to each baseball season all school year long. He truly loved the game!

Evan Akkashian (right)
Evan was one of the most athletic players I have ever coached at Roeper. Evan had the ability to make the Sportscenter highlight play. His strength was in his pitching. He was a workhorse in his Junior season where he carried our pitching staff. Every time Evan pitched, he gave us the ability to win. He was the team captain and he always led by example. Evan also played shortstop in his career.

 

SOUTHFIELD CHRISTIAN

Jared Ervin
Jared was a 3 year member of the varsity baseball program and he earned 4 varsity letters in baseball. He was a member of the 2018 MIAC Baseball Championship team and he plans to attend Grand Valley State University in the fall.

Caleb Glenn
Caleb was a 2 year member of the varsity baseball team, he earned 4 varsity letters in baseball and he also earned a varsity letter in track. He plans to attend Howard University in the fall.

 

 

 

 

Ian Hanafee
Ian was a 4 year member of the varsity baseball team, he earned 4 varsity letters in football and was a member of the varsity basketball team. Ian helped the team to MIAC Baseball titles in 2018 and 2019 and he earned 2nd Team All MIAC Conference and MHSBCA All District honors. Ian was named the team’s “Most Spirited” teammate twice. He will attend Wheaton College in the fall and be a member of the football program.

Blake Parpart
Blake was a 4 year member of the varsity baseball team and he also earned 4 varsity letters in football. Blake helped the baseball team to back-to-back MIAC conference titles in 2018 & 2019 and he was a 2 time 1st Team All MIAC Conference selection, as well as a 2 time MHSBCA All District selection. Blake will attend Kalamazoo College in the fall where he plans to play football and baseball.

 

CLARENCEVILLE

Tavian Cruz
A five-tool player, Tavian earned All-Western Wayne Athletic Conference honors in 2018 and 2019 as well as All-District honors in 2019. Batting leadoff, he set the table for our offense during his years as a Trojan. Tavian also excelled in the field as a shortstop where he exhibited tremendous range and instincts. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm and respect of the game. Tavian will continue his academic and baseball career at Rochester University where he plans to pursue a degree in Sports Marketing. Thank you Tavian!

Antonio Iuliano
Every team needs a player like Antonio. Whether it was on the ball diamond as an outfielder or in the dugout, Antonio kept the team loose and having fun. He was also responsible for one of the best catches you’ll ever see. In the 7th inning of the 2019 Regional Semifinal, Antonio’s diving catch in right center field sealed the 3-2 win for the Trojans. He will miss his days with his teammates on the ball diamond and will be equally missed in return. Antonio will continue his education at Oakland Community College where he plans to study Automotive Mechanics. Thank you Antonio!

Zachary Jones
During his years as a Trojan, Zach proved to be a leader and fantastic teammate. When asked what he was most proud of, he put the team first stating, “I’m most proud of being a part of a program that won three District Championships and a Regional Championship.” To be sure, Zach was an integral part of those accomplishments and he earned All-District honors in 2018. His combination of power and speed made him a threat when at bat. In the field, Zach excelled as a pitcher and center fielder. Zach plans on attending MIAT College of Technology and pursuing a career in HVAC. Thank you Zach!

Anthony Mullen
On the baseball diamond, Anthony served as a valuable and selfless teammate. Primarily a catcher, Anthony was willing to take on any role that was asked of him. This was only possible due to his high baseball IQ. This past winter, he did an exceptional job leading our winter conditioning and preparing our pitchers. Anthony intends to continue his education and earn a degree in computer science. Thank you Anthony!

Garret Peeler
Garret began playing baseball in his junior year and it was a pleasant surprise that he did. He showed tremendous growth during his first year and we were all looking forward to what he would have accomplished this season. Garret expressed that he enjoyed his opportunity to play the game and that he loved his time with his teammates. Garret will go on to serve our country as he plans to enlist in the Marine Corps. Thank you Garret!

Benjamin Shute
Ben’s intelligence and fundamentals allowed him to be an effective second baseman. He could always be counted on to be in the correct position whether it be a relay or executing a bunt defense. Ben’s love of the game and his teammates shined through and contributed greatly to the team’s success during his time as a Trojan. As the team’s resident genius, Ben earned MHSBCA All-Academic honors in 2019. Ben will attend Schoolcraft College and pursue a degree in Business Administration. Thank you Ben!

Zachary Topolewski
Zach’s athletic ability made him a versatile player as he could be counted on to play second base, outfield, and shortstop. Offensively, Zach batted in the top of the order and was a clutch hitter. His combined talents in the field and at bat earned him All-District honors in 2019. Zach stated that he will miss his teammates and coaches and I know those feelings are reciprocated by all. Zach will continue his education by first attending Schoolcraft College before heading off to Michigan State University. He intends to earn a degree in either Athletic Training or Physical Therapy. Thank you Zach!

WHITMORE LAKE

Gareth Romine
Gareth is one that will be missed at Whitmore Lake. He manifests outstanding leadership both on the field and in the classroom. He is a two-sport captain (basketball and baseball), 3.5 GPA, and a member of the student council and National Honors Society. He works hard, pushes others, and is very community-oriented. Next fall, Gareth will be attending Grand Valley State University where he hopes to continue his athletic journey. The future is bright for this young man.

 

 

 

Lutheran Northwest

The 2020 senior class of the Lutheran Northwest baseball program consists of seven seniors who all have experience in the program. Carter Beck, Michael Conte, Aaron Gunn, Brendan Pfenning, Jacob Ponder, Carter Rohman, and Jack Wieleba have all been a part of the LHNW baseball program during their high school career. These seniors were heading into their senior year coming off back-to-back MIAC championship seasons and reaching the district final in every season of their high school career. The 2019 season finally saw them break through and earn a district championship.

The season may have ended early, but this group of young men had been preparing for the baseball season for quite some time. Both Aaron Gunn and Jacob Ponder were returning as All-MIAC players from 2019. Carter Rohman has earned All-MIAC honors each of the previous three years and will continue his playing career at the University of Maine. Each of these young men has given their time and talents to Lutheran Northwest athletics in many ways. Their contributions will be missed on the field, in the dugout, and in the hallways.

OAKLAND CHRISTIAN

Jillian Parkhurst

Jillian has been with the Oakland Christian women’s varsity soccer program since her freshman year. She has been the Lancer goalkeeper every year and has been a calm and steady presence in the net. She was selected as a team captain this year as a senior because of her experience and leadership. After graduation, Jillian will attend Grand Valley State University. Thank you, Jill, for your fierce competitiveness in the net and for all your contributions to OCS women’s varsity soccer!

Mackenzie Wander

Mackenzie, often referred to as “Genius”, is one of our team captains. Last year was her first year with the Lancer soccer team and her athletic ability quickly proved to be an asset especially on the defensive back four. She quickly developed into a leader on the team and the coaching staff knew she would be one of our leaders this upcoming year. After graduation, Mackenzie will attend High Point University in North Carolina. Thank you, Genius, for all of your contributions to OCS women’s varsity soccer!

Carolina Curcuru

The CSPA Women’s Soccer team was established in the 2017 school year. Senior, Carolina Curcuru is the
last original lady Sentinel that started the team. With the conclusion of the 2020 season, Carolina is the
last of the ‘original interrupters’ which was the nickname for the team during the first year of play.
Carolina was the only freshmen when the team was developed and has played all four years.

Carolina is a versatile player with skills that can be counted on in any position on the field. She dominates in
defense and has proved her skills as a striker in the 2018-2019 season. Her dedication and leadership
skills granted her the assistant captain in her sophomore year and she became captain for the team in
her junior and senior years.

Carolina will be attending Michigan State University in the fall of 2020 to study Nursing. Congratulations Carolina!

SOUTHFIELD CHRISTIAN

Anna Giacoma
Anna is a 2 year varsity soccer player and the Eagles loan senior this year.  She will be attending Snow College in the fall to study outdoor leadership and entrepreneurship.  Thank you Anna for all your hard work at SCS!

CLARENCEVILLE

Monica Gonzalez
A versatile player and natural leader, Monica served as a captain for the Trojans in her junior year, as she displays a number of qualities that help make teammates and others around her better. Monica possesses a rare combination of the decision making abilities of a midfielder with the instincts of a centerback. These qualities led Monica to making over 40 varsity starts for Clarenceville. Monica is the type of player coaches want to be on the field for every second of every game.

Jordan Lay
A 2019 Western Wayne Athletic all-conference selection, Jordan is a tenacious and strong defender who started over 40 games for the Trojans over her Sophomore and Junior seasons. Many opponent scoring opportunities were limited and thwarted by Jordan’s excellent positioning and ability to anticipate the play before it happens. Additionally, Jordan was a 3-sport athlete at Clarenceville, while also competing in varsity bowling and volleyball. Her drive to compete and will to never give up are two qualities that Jordan will take with her beyond the field.

Samantha Arai
Over the past 2 seasons of Sam’s Trojan soccer career she showed immense effort and improvement. Sam is a great teammate and always dedicated herself to doing whatever she could to help the team, on and off the field. Primarily as a midfielder and attacker, Sam made over 15 varsity starts for the Trojans and played a key role by making appearances in many other games.

Rena Ngo
Rena started over 30 varsity soccer games for Clarenceville and undoubtedly would have started more, but for ankle and foot injuries that hampered her over Sophomore and Junior seasons. Primarily in the midfield, Rena’s energy- both physical and mental were a great contribution to her team every time she stepped on the field. In addition to soccer, Rena also earned her varsity letter for sideline cheer.

LUTHERAN NORTHWEST

Teresa Kujawa, Sarah Owens, Annabelle Tyrell, Gabby Woomer and Alyssa Haller

The Lutheran Northwest senior class is comprised of four players who have been a part of the LHNW soccer program their entire high school career (Teresa Kujawa, Sarah Owens, Annabelle Tyrell, and Gabby Woomer) and one player joining for the first time (Alyssa Haller). This group of seniors had prepared for this season bringing their experience, knowledge of the game, leadership, and personality to the team. These seniors have worked to build the skill level as well as positive attitude and comradery with their team.

Coach Steve Ferguson highlighted the unique traits each player brings to the team and program. Teresa Kujawa is a dedicated student of the game working tirelessly on perfecting her footwork, moves, and skills. She constantly tries to push those around her for their best, including spending all offseason preparing physically for this season, and was always motivating her teammates to get active and stay active. Sarah Owen’s playing experience has allowed her to fit into any position, even spending some time filling in as goalkeeper and is willing to do what it takes to help her team. A part of her willingness to play any position is that Sarah does so with total commitment giving it her all physically. Annabelle Tyrell is willing and able to make those sprints up and down the sideline as an outside mid/winger in an almost tireless fashion. She is also known to keep her teammates (and coaches) on their toes with her constant commentary during training sessions. Gabby Woomer is a fearless player. She started her keeper training as a backup her freshmen year, and every year she was able to add more goalkeeper skills to her arsenal. Gabby has been willing to sacrifice her health and well-being to throw herself in front of any shot to help give her team a chance at winning, then crack a joke immediately afterwards. This was going to be Alyssa Haller’s first year playing soccer. She is a fast player and a quick learner. Her positive attitude and persistence helped her to build and develop skills in a hurry as she prepared for her first season; skills she looked forward to putting on display to help her team.

CHARYL STOCKWELL ACADEMY

CSPA Senior-Joel Calkins is coming off a CSPA MVP golf season in 2019. He had the lowest scoring average of all players and qualified for the Regional Championship. He has a terrific power game and with a little more improvement in his short game, was poised to be a top MIAC performer this season.  Joel has worked hard and his talents will be missed next year. Joel will be entering Michigan State in the fall of 2020.

CSPA Senior-Riley Dickerson is truly a team leader and carried the mantle of Team Captain with honor and integrity. Last spring, he won the Coaches Leadership Award and thanks to a great finish in the last tournament of the year, Riley secured himself a spot in the Regional Championship. His leadership qualities will certainly assist him as he moves into the next chapter of his life.

ROEPER

The term student athlete is the perfect moniker for senior Calvin Watry.  His message to future MIAC athletes is to be mindful that studies are first.  Calvin used athletics to relax from the rigors of academia.

His greatest memory of MIAC athletics is the 2019 Roeper School Golf Championship. Calvin recounts, “Our best player was sick, and the rest of us had to pick up the slack.” That feeling of supporting his teammates was the most important thing to Calvin.  He expressed thankfulness for the sportsmanship from other teams in the MIAC and will miss the feeling of “family” with the soccer team.

Calvin will attend Long Island University on a full scholarship.

 

PLYMOUTH CHRISTIAN

The Plymouth Christian golf program has been on the rise the last few years with participation numbers through the roof, and being considered one of the top schools in the entire conference. PCA won the conference in 2018 and place second in the conference in 2019. With a strong core of Seniors returning, the 2020 season would have been no different. The team came into the season with 14 projected golfers and had high goals to win the MIAC title, compete in the MHSAA Regional Match, and qualify for the MHSAA state match in 2020.

WHITMORE LAKE

NOVI CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Dawson Cleminte

Although denied another chance to shine his promising athletic abilities this Spring leading the Novi Christian Golf team, Senior, Dawson Cleminte, will no doubt continue in a successful future.  Dawson would have once again been a multi-sport athlete, participating in soccer, basketball and golf for his final year of high school.

Dawson received the MIAC conference 1st team and NCA MVP awards for soccer last Fall, successfully juggled basketball and a prime role in the high school musical, Frozen Jr., during the winter season, and had plans to play travel soccer all while finishing up his senior year of high school and participating on the golf team.  One cannot deny the benefits that school sports has had in teaching him to prioritize, focus, lead and maintain “high honors” academic status.

Dawson plans to attend Southeastern University in the Fall and will be missed by all at Novi Christian Academy.  He leaves with encouraging words for his friends and younger teammates:  “play every game like it is your last”.

The HVL Golf team was ready to hit links this spring!   2 Seniors were leading our team this year.   Seniors Jonathan Tosto and Anna Vanderveen have both played golf for 3 years at HVL.

We thank them for the leadership and contributions to HVL Athletics!

PARKWAY CHRISTIAN

Cayd Maccagnone

Cayd has been a member of the varsity golf team at Parkway for all four years.  Cayd has also been a member of Parkway’s musical theatre department; this year he had the role of Captain Von Trapp.

OAKLAND CHRISTIAN

 

Ricky Frazier

Ricky came to High School golf with a lot of experience and a developed swing. He was way ahead of the game. Unfortunately, an injury slowed up his game. This season could have been a crowning moment for him to join a group of guys who also wanted to improve and who enjoy the game. Ricky’s positive spirit and comfort on the course will help him connect and impact others in the future.

Congratulations to our Senior Varsity Softball Players, (left to right):

Congratulations to the entire NCA Softball team who received the MHSSCA Academic All-State Team 2020 Award, and to Katie McCormick who received the MHSSCA Academic All-State Individual 2020 Award.

Julianna “JuJu” Dubuc, who previously played first base, was promoted to catcher this year and would have done a great job. Besides her great catching abilities, she had the needed vocal chords and leadership qualities! Julianna played softball throughout high school and her coaches enjoyed her desire to improve and teachable spirit. She has a joy for life that is contagious to those around her. Julianna graduates with Honors and plans to attend Schoolcraft College, majoring in culinary arts and minoring in communications.

Katie McCormick played varsity softball and volleyball during her four years of high school. This year, she placed 2nd in the lineup to bat and would have been the third baseman. Katie, a multi-sport athlete, figure skated during the winter season. Katie was a joy to her coaches and has a quiet and gentle spirit. Katie was a member of the NHS and is graduating with High Honors. She plans to study engineering at Hope College.

Molly Jebson played on the varsity team in her freshman year and was making a comeback for her senior year. Molly, a natural and multi-sport athlete, would have been a star player for the softball team as short-stop. Her coaches enjoyed her coachable spirit and desire to improve. Molly also excelled in her positions on the varsity volleyball and basketball teams and was captain of both. Molly graduates with Honors and plans to attend Southwestern AOG University, majoring in hospitality & event planning, and minoring in psychology.

Oakland Christian

The Oakland Christian softball senior class is comprised of 4 players that would be returning with 3 years experience (Hagar, Maley, Vaught, Williams) and 1 international student that would be playing for the 1st time (Jin). This group of seniors was approaching this season with a world of experience and leadership abilities. They were a close group that was willing to sacrifice their personal desires for the good of the team. Autumn Maley was a utility player that played every spot in the outfield wherever needed in that moment. Jackie Hagar loved the outfield but did her best as the team’s first baseman when called upon, and Nicole Vaught took on the role of starting pitcher even though it wasn’t her natural position because the team was in need due to previous graduations. A supporter among leaders was Olivia Williams with her never ending support and leadership on the team. Always positive when her team needed it the most to help them move forward. One disappointment in this cancellation is that Emily Jin was unable to experience playing for a team she was learning to love as she enjoyed all the friendships she was creating as a member of the team building and workout experiences.

Oakland Christian is extremely proud of these players for what they have developed into as players and people over their years of participation in the softball program.

Plymouth Christian

The senior class members of the Plymouth Christian Academy Eagles softball team have had a tremendous career! When joining the team as freshman, the team was going through a drought of having only won one game the previous two years.  In 2017, due in large part to the contribution of these athletes, the team went 9-9.  By 2019, they were 11-6 and went on to win the MIAC Red Division Conference Championship and District Championships! The Plymouth Christian Academy Varsity Softball team was chomping at the bit to get this season started competing in the Blue Division this year and with goals of competing for a District and Regional trophy!
Thank you Ella Godin, Isabel Mossel, Gloria Ravuri, Lydia Sikes, and Eva Warmbier for the wonderful contributions you made to rebuilding the team and the positive impact you had through your hard work, leadership, and athletic fortitude.  May you continue to always play with joy…For Him!”

Southfield Christian

Karington Cox

Karington was a 4 year varsity player for the softball team starting at 2nd Base the past 2 seasons and batting leading off.  During her junior season she batted .424 with an On Base Percentage of .672.  Karington led the team in runs scored with 29 helping the Eagles capture a share of the 2019 MIAC Softball Red Title.  She also earned MIAC 2nd Team All-Conference honors as well as being named MHSSCA All District and All Regional.

Huron Valley Lutheran

The Huron Valley Lutheran Hawks softball team had their goals set high and were ready to complete in the 2020 season.  With the experience of 6 seniors, the Hawks could not wait to take the field.

We thank seniors Autumn Cramb, Maddie Crenshaw, Hannah Foley, Dana LeFevre, Emily Haines, and Chloe Wellday for their contributions to Hawks Softball as well as their leadership both on and off the field.

Whitmore Lake

Alaina DiDio
Ali has been a leader on the field. She was voted team captain. Her knowledge of the game of softball is outstanding. She is an overall great athlete as well and a well-rounded student. She is involved in many aspects of our school and plans to carry that forward to the next level as she plans to continue to play softball next year.

Lutheran Northwest 

Kaitlyn Meyer

Kaitlyn’s parents are Elizabeth & Jeff Meyer. They are members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Clarkston.

During her time at Lutheran Northwest, Kaitlyn participated in volleyball for one year, golf for two years, cheer & dance for one year, and softball for three years. This spring would have been her fourth year of softball. LHNW softball coach Jeff Ludwig shared, “She is a great teammate and very coachable! She is always willing to put in the extra time to master her craft. She has been a joy to coach!”

Next fall, Kaitlyn plans to attend Oakland Community College to study veterinary medicine.

PARKWAY CHRISTIAN

Austyn Spach
Austyn is a four year varsity softball player for Parkway.  She is also Parkway’s only four year three sport athlete in her class competing in volleyball, competitive cheer and softball.  As a sophomore and junior she earned 2nd team All MIAC honors as catcher.  Her junior year she also received All District.  As a senior Austyn received Academic All State.
Becca Shea

Becca is a four year varsity softball player.  Spending the last few years on the mound.  Becca has also played four years of basketball.  Becca has earned All District three years, 2nd Team MIAC (sophomore), and 1st Team MIAC (junior).  As a senior Becca received Academic All State.

Bella Day
This was going to be Bella’s inaugural softball season.  She has been a member of the varsity volleyball team for four years.
Jena Dickison
Jena has been a member of the varsity softball team for four years.  She has shown remarkable improvement in her skills every season, earning a starting position at second base as a junior. As a senior she received Academic All State.
Keagan Semlow
Keagan was new to the softball team this year.
Keagan transferred to Parkway her junior year and was the goalie for the soccer team.  As a senior she received Academic All State.
Lexi Bello
Lexi transferred to Parkway her sophomore year and has been a member of the softball team for three years.  She was new to softball and worked hard to become a starter her junior year.
